Bleach is a chemical designed to strip the hair of its pigment. It is permanent and often used before applying a semi-permanent color to intensify the results.

Bleach is a chemical and can produce a very nasty burn if not used properly. If you get any on your skin, wipe it away immeadiatly and apply a base (such as petroleum jelly) to neutralize the burn (a sharp stabbing sensation). Hair bleach is a combination of a powdered bleach and a liquid developer that must be mixed together, has a certain amount of active time, and cannot be saved. never seal off a mixed container of bleach as it may explode or pop.

What you will need:

-Bleach (powder and developer)

-gloves

-tinting brush

-petroleum jelly

-small plastic container

-plastic bag or cap

-clips

-drop cloth

-old shirt or towel

Getting ready:

-Put on your Hair dying shirt with nothing underneith unless it can be removed by means other than lifting over your head (i.e. a bra is ok).

-Lay down drop cloth or old towel on the floor around the area where you will be when applying the bleach.

-For Very Dark or Very resistant hair, wash but do not condition your hair, and throughly blow dry and comb out your hair (Comb, never brush wet hair. Though the package says to apply the bleach to unwashed hair, by drying the hair out, the bleach can be absorbed more readily, as opposed to dirty hair which repels bleach due to oil residue. However, getting rid of the oils in your hair provides less protection for your scalp.).

-Apply petroleum jelly to hair line, ears, and any other areas subject to contact with bleach

-Put on the gloves.

-Following directions on package, mix bleach and developer.

Bleaching:

-Useing either a tint brush or just your gloved fingers, apply the bleach to selected strands of hair working from the scalp down to the ends. Do NOT comb bleach though hair as it can snap and destroy it.

-once the bleach has been applied, wrap the hair up on top of the head, and cover with a plastic bag, plastic wrap, or aluminium foil.

-A heating pad can be applied over the plastic or foil to increase the bleach's activity

-Let sit for instructed amount of time, or untill desired lightness is acheived

-Rinse out bleach and wash your hair.

-If you are just bleaching, you may condition your hair. You may also do so if you are going to apply color over the bleach, and are willing to wait a day or two before doing so. It will work better if you hair has time to adjust to the chemical change and get rid of the bleach's residue.

-If you are impatiant, do not conditon your hair, but wash and blow dry it before proceeding with the color.

Streaks:

-Select small sections of hair wrap them in tin foil after applying the bleach to keep them seperate from the rest of the hair

High lights:

-Using a cap and a hook, pull small strands of hair though holes. apply bleach to all the hair poking through the cap.
