Semi-Permanent Hair color is Level 2 and lasts about 6-8 weeks

*new* TUTORIAL

Semi-Permanent, or level 2 hair dye, comes in every shade of the rainbow. If for some reason you cannot find the exact shade you desire, the colors can be mixed with others or a toner. Level 2 dyes last about 6-8 weeks, depending on certain variables, mostly how often you wash your hair. Brands of semi-permanent hair color include Manic Panic, Special effects, R.A.W., and Punky (by Jerome Russell).

What You Will Need:

-The Dye

-old shirt or a smock of sorts that you wont mind getting dirty.

-drop cloth

-A Pair of plastic gloves (rubber works but may snag hair)

-Tinting brush(es)

-small plastic container(s)

-petroleum jelly or other base (Vaseline, baby oil, etc.)

-clips (claw clips work great)

-Plastic wrap, plastic bag, or aluminium foil

Getting Ready:

-Put on your Hair dying shirt with nothing underneith unless it can be removed by means other than lifting over your head (i.e. a bra is ok).

-Lay down drop cloth or old towel on the floor around the area where you will be when applying the dye.

-Shampoo your hair (do not use conditoner if you can help it. It is a Base and will repel the dye).

-Throughly blow dry and comb out your hair (Comb, never brush wet hair. By drying the hair out, the dye can be absorbed more readily, as opposed to dirty hair which repels dye due to oil residue).

-Apply petroleum jelly to hair line, ears, and any other area you dont want stained with color.

-Put on the gloves.

-Pour estimated amount of dye into a plastic container, or just use out of the bottle.

Dying:

-Useing either a tint brush or just your fingers and a comb apply the dye to selected strands of hair working from the scalp down to the ends. comb dye though hair. (Do not worry if dye gets on your scalp. The worst that can happen with a level 2 dye is that your scalp will be slightly discolored for a day or two).

-once the desired color has been applied, wrap the hair up on top of the head, and cover with a plastic bag, plastic wrap, or aluminium foil.

-A heating pad can be applied over the plastic or foil to increase the color's intensity.

-Let sit for desired amount of time (Level 2 hair color will not burn or damage you or your hair in anyway. It's more like a coating over the strand. It is perfectly ok to leave the dye in for 5 minutes, or 5 hours. The longer you let it sit, the bolder to color).

-Rinse out dye with the coldest water you can stand untill it runs clear (the hotter the water, the more dye is removed from the hair).

-A rinse mixture of 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 water raises the PH level and gives more staying power.

-A very small amount of shampoo may be used to remove excess dye so it does not rub off on your pillow at night (to be safe, sleep with an old towel on top of the pillow to protect it from unwanted stains).

-You may now use all the conditioner you want. Dry and style as desired.

Multiple colors, sections:

-Using elastics, put hair into sections of desired thickness.

-Apply dye one color at a time

-After dying each section, wrap it in tinfoil to prevent the colors from mixing.

-Wash out the darker colors first while the lighter ones are still protected by the tinfoil.

Multiple colors, blended:

-start from the lightest color and work to the darkest

-use different tinting brushes for each color if possible

-rinse out the darker colors before the ligther ones if possible

Tie Dye:

-Dye Hair a single color, following the standard instructions (use the color wheel at the bottom of the page. You'll be mixing colors)

-Put hair into sections of desired size.

-Tightly fasten each section with desired amount and size of elastics (the more and the wider the elastics are, the more the first color will show up. Pieces of cloth will also work for bigger sections of hair).

-Dye hair a second color, being careful not to dislodge the elastics (use the color wheel at the bottom of the page to help you with the mixing of the dyes to be sure you get the desired colors).

-Still leaving the elastic in place, wash out according to the standard instructions. Making sure the water runs clear is extreemly important.

-Remove all elastics from hair to reviel and cool tie dyed effect.

Rainbow Hair:

-only the three primary colors are needed for this. It's much easier and will look better than if you try to use six or seven colors.

-Do only one color at a time. apply dye to the upper third of hair first. follow standard instructions for the entire process, but dont use shampoo.

-Then, do the mid third the next color. Again follow standard instructions without shampoo.

-Finally, dye the last third, then follow through will standard instructions, using a small amount of shampoo if desired.
